Biography
Hello, I'm Michael Schupbach. I am a multiple award-winning character designer, builder, and performer.
I'm alumnus of Jim Henson's Muppet Workshop, where I started at age 19, I've designed and built puppets for television programs, movies, and Tony Award-winning theatrical productions. I am also the proud owner of four Daytime Emmy Awards for my work on Sesame Street.
My work can currently be seen on the new series for the Disney Channel Johnny and the Sprites, a show that I served as co-creator, character designer, puppet supervisor, and performer (whew!).
I have worked side by side with renowned puppet designer Rick Lyon on the Tony Award-winning smash hit Avenue Q. I have built for the show since its inception at the BMI Workshops through to its latest run in London. Also for Broadway, I constructed and performed various incarnations of Audrey II for Little Shop of Horrors.
My additional credits include Disney Channel's Emmy Award-winning Playhouse Disney series Bear in the Big Blue House, the Disneyland stage show Bear in the Big Blue House Live, IFC's Greg the Bunny, Puppet Planet for the Travel Channel, Noggin's interactive series Play with Me Sesame, and Universal Studios' Sesame Street in 4-D. I also supervised Muppet guest appearances on The West Wing, Good Morning America, The Dr. Phil Show, An Evening with the Boston Pops, and The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
I hold a degree from Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey's Clown College as well as a somewhat more serious B.A. in Education with a concentration in Children's Television from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.
