Biography

Yarns & noble is the work of Geofrey Redd.

The canvas- all work is done on “found” wood. I scour the streets/alleys of San Diego looking for prime and unique pieces of wood that for one reason or another has been discarded. I rip off tabletops, the part of a wood seat that you sit on, signs for yard sales, or just wood that looks like it was discarded from a construction site. This is cheap and green, also I like the idea that someone may see something and recognize that it once resided in their home.

The nails- Hundreds and sometimes in the larger pieces, thousands of hand hammered nails. I take the wood out to a nearby park (I live in a small complex with very nice neighbors that I do not want to disturb). I usually throw on whatever audiobook i’m listening to at the time and hammer after my day job until it gets too dark to see (I tried at night with a light, but the number of times I smashed my thumb and pointer finger was way too much for me to keep trying to do it in the dark)

The Yarn- This is my favorite part, I use a ridiculous amount of yarn to connect the nails to make the image complete. I love this part because for me its very free flowing and most of the time, even I am surprised at the outcome and how neat it looks. I never really know if its going to look cool or not and quite often have to cut yarn off to restart because something doesn’t look right, or I put the wrong layer of color first.
